Late at night, ALF is making art out of food products while loudly playing Wagner's ''Ride of the Valkyries'' Willie comes up to try and quiet him down. Willie takes away the boom box. ALF then resumes the art work. That morning, Kate is humming ''Ride of the Valkyries'' while making breakfast. Brian loudly tells her to stop having gotten almost no sleep the previous night. ALF then shows everyone the artwork he made which is made of real peanut butter sandwiches on a canvas. Kate thinks it looks like something she saw at traffic school. ALF suggests that Lynn show it to her art teacher. Lynn then prepares to go to her class.

At UCLA's Royce Hall, Lynn is at her class and the teacher, [[Lloyd Rubin]], is commenting on the work his students work. He notices one of them has painted a nude, and says the model is very attractive, to which a female student, Ellen thanks him. He then comments that he probably brought the two together. He then asks Lynn what she brought to show him. He opens her portfolio and pulls out ALF's work, and Lynn is shocked to see it in there. She says it's a big mistake but Mr. Rubin says its and excellent work and has combined the stylistic elements of Pollock, Rauschenberg, Jasper Johns,.. and Lynn interrupting Chef Boyardee.

At home,Lynn chides ALF for sneaking his art into Lynn's portfolio, but then talks about how the teacher liked it, ALF is happy to hear this. Kate is in shock that it could be considered art, while Lynn is mad at ALF.

Inspired by the teacher's positive feedback ALF goes to the garage to make more art out of food. He's made several more pieces and continuing to listen to Wagner. Willie brings him more supplies. Lynn comes in and asks about where all the new art came from, and ALF says he discovered Luther Vandross, Lynn asks ALF to give her some space to work and that she'd rather poke herself in the eye with a sharp stick that take his advice. She then shows him her new painting of a tropical forest, which ALF dislikes with a passion.

Back at Lynn's art class, Mr. Rubin asks if anyone heard about his new gallery opening. Ellen reads the news article and then Mr. Rubin jokes that anyone who buys $2,000 or more worth of paintings can skip the final exam. Another student asks Ellen if she'll do any more posing. The other students leave, and Mr. Rubin asks Lynn if she has anything new to show him. She pulls out her tropical scene painting which Mr. Rubin invites her talk about over coffee. He then asks her out on a date. Lynn then turns him down and asks him if she really likes her work or if he's just saying it to win her over. He admits that he was.

ALF is in the family room, and sorting his work. Lynn comes home to let ALF know his career is in the toilet because the teacher only pretended to like her work because he thought it would help him win a date with her. ALF tells her to go out with Mr Rubin anyway but Lynn already dropped the class.

Later ALF is in the attic lamenting over what happened, and Lynn comes up to apologize to ALF over mocking him. She tells him that many great artists never lived to see their own success, and to complete his unfinished work

True Colors

Lloyd Rubin pretends to really enjoy ALF's painting, but really he is only interested in asking Lynn on a date.

True Colors is the sixteenth episode of ALF's fourth and final season. It originally aired on Jan. 22, 1990.

Plot Summary

Lynn takes an art class and ALF slips in a food painting of his own into her portfolio. When her teacher Lloyd Rubin sees it, he pretends to like it because he wants to ask her on a date. When Lynn realizes that he is only pretending to like her work, she switches to another class.

ALF is dejected because Lloyd Rubin didn't really like his art, but Lynn encourages him to paint because he enjoys it and not to aspire for greatness.
