"The old ALFer" or "the ol' ALFer" is one of ALF's nicknames. The Tanner family uses this as a term of endearment for him.
One of ALF's catch phrases that was spoken by the ALF talking doll and appeared on some of his Valentine cards was "How about a hug for the old ALFer?"
