Brian and ALF are looking at a picture book of animals. ALF wants a new pet, but Willie says the house is too small so ALF suggests getting a horse to keep outside. Willie says no to that also

ALF is playing with a hobby horse in the house, then Willie walks in with a paper bag. Inside is an ant farm. ALF thinks it's a waste of money because they can be obtained free outside. ALF eventually becomes interested and starts feeding the ants. Lynn and Brian come up to see ALF's new pets. Lynn reads from a booklet that came with the ant farm and watches them more closely. He thinks that they are wrestling. Later ALF asks Kate and Willie whether brown or white rice is good for a wedding. ALF tosses rice though the kitchen pass through. They go into the kitchen to investigate and ALF says that two of the ants got married., Willie then asks ALF if he's now happy about getting the ant farm instead of a horse.

Lynn is up in the attic with a calendar "Alan Thicke's World of Ants" and Willie brought a box of farm toys. He then notices all the supplies ALF bought for the ant farm. Lynn then notices that the ant farm was left by a sunlit window and the the ants are dead. Lynn shows ALF the calendar, but then Willie tells ALF that the ants died.

ALF is in the attic and Willie comes up with a sandwich for him. ALF lost his appetite over his guilt that his ants died due to his negligence. Willie encourages him to vent and that he'll later feel better. The next morning in bed, Willie is giggling and thinks Kate is tickling him, It's actually ants in his bed that ALF lured into the house with food left around the house. Lynn asks why he did this, and ALF says he wants to help preserve the ant species. Kate tells ALF that ants have a better survival *outside* of her kitchen. Willie then suggests a memorial service for the ants. Later the family is outside preparing for a picnic. Willie brings ALF a wreath, and is asked to put it near the tombstones he made out of popsicle sticks. ALF then gives a short eulogy for the ants and asks Willie to say a few words for them, Kate speaks and says they were the most contained ants she's known. Lynn and Brian also say a few words for them also. That night, ALF is feasting on the picnic leftovers.

Funeral for a Friend is the twenty-first episode of ALF's third season. It originally aired on March 20, 1989.

Plot Summary

Willie buys ALF an ant farm and ALF becomes very fascinated with them, giving them all names. When ALF accidentally leaves the ants in the attic window they all die from the excess heat. ALF feels very guilty about this but he feels better after having a funeral for his ants.
