Dorothy

Dorothy Halligan Deaver at the Tanner's house.

Dorothy Halligan Deaver, played by Anne Meara, is a recurring character in ALF and is Kate's mother. Dorothy is not particularly fond of ALF and is 52-53 years old. She later got married to her second husband Whizzer Deaver.

Personality[]

Unlike her daughter, Dorothy is a meddling person. The latter tends to get bossy at times. She is not afraid to speak her mind and tends to argue with ALF. During her free time, she enjoys knitting and betting on horse races.

Dorothy and ALF have a love-hate relationship. The latter calls her "The Wicked Witch of the West" (possibly a sly reference to Dorothy Gale from the movie The Wizard of Oz). Dorothy often insults ALF and even threatened to turn him into a rug. Despite their strained relationship, there have been times when ALF had been a help, such as when he helped her get over widowhood and remarry. She actually appreciated his help.

Early Life[]

Dorothy was born in March 2 1921 and married Sparky in 1941. The woman later gave birth to Kate in 1949. Sparky passed away in 1976, and his wife would always call him "Dodo" when he was still alive.

Later Life[]

Dorothy moved in with the Tanners for a while after she had a falling out with her best friend "Crazy" Estelle, whose house was where she used to live. Dorothy was taken by surprise upon meeting ALF and soon disliked him. Dorothy Halligan moved into an apartment near the Tanners, where she met Whizzer Deaver.

In the second season, Mrs. Halligan got married to Mr. Deaver. When ALF indirectly disrupted her wedding with the "dreaded Melmacian hiccups," Dorothy forced ALF to accept a cure he considered dreadful: spinach. She used grandmotherly ways to get the alien to eat the spinach, praising him akin to a small child who ate all of his vegetables.

Etymology[]

Dorothy comes from a Greek name (Dōrothéa), which means "God's gift." The last name Halligan comes from the Irish "Ó hAilechain" or "Ó hAleagain." Deaver is an Irish variant of the name "Dever."
